Gender wars are exhausting.
jgh:
“Besides, and I will get killed for this but this entire notion of feminism is belittling. You don’t have men going around calling themselves maleists. Its the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever heard. If you want to be treated equally, then stop playing the gender card.”—
(via soupsoup)
By your definition, does “pointing out inequality” = “playing the gender card”? Or do you mean something else? How else are people to fight systematic discrimination on the basis of sex?
You know how you fight the systematic discrimination on the basis of sex? You succeed based on the merits of your own abilities as a HUMAN BEING. The constant reminder that you are a man or a woman is quite frankly exhausting. Everything you do doesn’t have to have your gender stamped on it. As different as men and women are, they actually have quite a bit in common.
My real point here is there is, especially in this campaign lately, and strategically, a knee jerk reaction to anytime Palin is called on her bullshit that its sexism or that no man would ever receive the same treatment.
If she wants to fight back, fight back by explaining her positions and defending them, and stop being a victim.
We’re all forgetting a very crucial piece of this puzzle. The only people bringing up the gender card are the Republicans. This is not to expose sexism or even to be “the victim.” Rather, it is a constant reminder that McCain’s ticket has a woman on it, and therefore must be the “champion of women’s rights.” Let’s not mention her policies on sex education or abortion, just look at her! She’s a woman! Don’t forget! And just so you don’t forget that she’s a WOMAN, every time an argument is made against her, we’ll remind you that SHE’S A WOMAN. Cut her some slack. The Republican party is creating this situation because it draws attention to where they want it most—her chest.
